All of the websites that I build are created using a content management system (CMS). A CMS gives you the ability to manage the content on your site yourself, you don’t have to rely on someone with technical skills to create, edit or remove pages or text. With just a few hours training you will even be able to upload pictures or embed videos from YouTube.
A content managed website is a platform to build on in the future. As your site grows, functionality can easily be added without having to redevelop the site from scratch. This means your website project can be staged to suit your budget - you can start with a basic site and then add a gallery, a blog, a search box, a database of staff or any number of things to suit your budget.
If you search Google for things like “cheap web design” or “affordable web design” you will see lots of websites that offer websites that are priced per page (eg £300 for 3 pages, £500 for 5 pages and so on). These sites may sound cheap, but in the long run you will realise that they aren’t as good as they sound:
The two content management systems I use most often are:
For ecommerce websites I use:
All of these systems are open source which means that they have been developed, tested and used by people all over the world. Often, if an agency create a website for you they will use their own bespoke system. This means you often have to rely on them for future amends and hosting - it can be a stressful process as often the systems are poorly maintained and aren’t thouroughly tested.
A website needs to look great, but it is just as important that your site is build with the search engines in mind. The search engines don’t see a website like you see one through a browser, they see the code that sits behind it. A website that looks good to you, could look like a dogs dinner to the search engine spiders. If the code is a mess, then it will be very difficult to get it to rank well in the search engines - which over time will have a big impact on your business. All of the sites I build are created with search engine optimisation in mind.
All of the sites I create come with 12 months free website hosting. This begins from when your website project begins.
